Hoffy's Two Way Channel Swim Attempt 2008

Text Box: My name is Paul Hopfensperger (‘Hoffy’). On Tuesday July 10, 2007, I became the 873rd person in history to swim the English Channel. I swum from Samphire Hoe in England to Wissant in France in 13 Hours and 52 Minutes (Click here for more info). I am trying to raise £50,000 for CLIC Sargent, the UK’s largest Children’s Cancer Charity and St. Nicholas’ Hospice. The first channel swim raised over £10,000 towards this target. Details of the two charities we are fundraising for can be found below:- CLIC Sargent - Every day 10 families are told their child has cancer. As the UK's leading children's cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is the only organisation to offer them all round care and support. That’s because they are there every step of the way: During treatment, providing specialist nurses, doctors, play specialists, Homes from Home. In hospital & at home offering specialist social care and family support in the community – specialist youth services, holidays, grants, helpline. After treatment – helping survivors, supporting those bereaved, research. St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds, provides palliative care for patients and their families who are living with terminal illnesses like cancer. This care can be provided to the end of life, in the Hospice, in local hospitals and at home. This is entirely free to all who need their help. They can only do this with the generous support from local communities. For 2008 my wife Beccy and I continued our fundraising efforts for CLIC Sargent and St Nicholas’ Hospice by attempting the following four major swims:- SWIM 1 - July 13, 2008 - Jarak to Sabac, a 19KM FINA Open Water World Cup Grand Prix river swim in the River Sava, Serbia - Click here for a full report and photos. SWIM 2 - August 11, 2008 - Jersey to France - I was attempting to become only the 13th person in history to complete this swim. Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather, my wife and I sat in Jersey for a week, but I was unable to swim - Click here for further information. SWIM 3 - September 11, 2008 - England to France to England - I was attempting to become only the 19th person and oldest man in history to complete a two way English Channel swim. I did in fact swim the channel for the second time becoming only the 84th person in history to swim it more than once, but did not attempt the 2nd leg due to the weather conditions at the start of the swim which totally affected me mentally. - Click here for further information and photos from the swim which took place over the night of the 11th and 12th of September, 2008.
